It seems Ghanaian actors have caught the music bug in recent times. Whether it is singing for charity or singing in TV commercials, the actors have been in the news for venturing into music one way or the other. Joining the phenomenon is Majid Michel who just finished a dance single titled, ‘My Love To You’.
The actor who has been touring North America for some time now, recorded the single with his producer brother, Sputnic (Sputnic Music Group) in Los Angeles. Although much is not known about Majid’s music talent, he is a ‘fun guy’ and so doing dance music should have some interesting results once the song is mixed and mastered. Watch this space

Ghanaian Producers Splits, Socrates Sarfo Clashes With Idikoko

Socrates Sarfo

The center can no longer hold within the leadership of the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) as reports say both members and leadership are divided.
This comes months after the association had controversially banned some top Ghanaian actors who had issues with its members.
Currently, reports said members of the association were having serious problems with its president, Augustine Abbey, popularly called Idikoko, and were even planning to suspend him.
Even though a few members of the association had come out to speak publicly about their grievances, the association’s mouth piece, Socrates Sarfo and Treasurer Helen Omaboe have been vocal.
Socrates and Idikoko clashed on Peace FM’sEntertainment Review on Saturday in an unanticipated verbal brawl between the two officials of FIPAG.
This was after Idikoko answered questions from host Akwasi Aboagye concerning operations of the association and its upcoming elections, as well as concerns from unnamed members.
When it was Socrates Sarfo’s turn to comment on the president’s responses, he cunningly asked Idikoko to tell the whole world what his functions as FIPAG president were.
Socrates further questioned Idikoko on why he had taken over the responsibilities of the treasurer.
It was obvious that all was not well at FIPAG. Idikoko, during his response, sounded angry.
Augustine Abbey aka Idikoko president of FIPAG
He said he found Socrates’ question unfortunate because their constitution spelt out the functions of the president. To him, Socrates was not fair to him by asking the question on a public platform.
However, Idikoko’s response was that he as president was the main head of the association and could be held responsible when things went wrong. Idikoko said he therefore had the right to ensure every department of the association functioned effectively.
However, he did not explain why he had taken over the treasurer’s job, because, according to him, he did not want to publicize the negative reasons that pushed him into doing that. He prefers to do that at their meeting.
This appears to be a beginning of a new era in running the affairs of FIPAG.
Not too long ago, movie producers from Kumasi who were registered members of FIPAG threatened to stage a massive demonstration against the association’s president, Idikoko and his executive over what they described as an unfair distribution of some GH¢200,000 given to FIPAG from COSGA as monies accrued from copyright levies. The new brouhaha is also about money.

Yvonne Nelson Named Hottest Actress

Nigerian entertainment website Nigeriafilms.com has named popular Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson as its hottest and favourite actress after comparing her with other top Nigerian and Ghanaian actresses.
The declaration has come barely a week to the actress’s planned huge public premiere of her movie, ‘Single & Married’, on September 22 in Ghana and on the 28th in Nigeria.
Yvonne starred in the movie and produced it too.
The website’s report on Sunday, September 16, compared three Ghanaian actresses- Yvonne Nelson, Jackie Appiah and Nadia Buari- to their Nigerian counterparts- Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Ekeinde, Rita Dominic, Mercy Johnson, Ini Edo and Tonto Dike- over who was hot, on and off the screens.
Even though it didn’t define the criteria for how the names were arrived at as well as a deeper meaning to “on and off the screen”, it named the Ghanaian as the hottest.
“When you compare Nigerian actresses with Ghanaian actresses, you will see that the Ghanaian Actresses Jackie Appiah, Nadia Buari and Yvonne Nelson are hotter than Nigeria’s Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Rita Dominic, Mercy Johnson, Ini Edo and Tonto Dike on and off screen.”
The website’s correspondent further went ahead to put Yvonne Nelson above the rest, saying, “Especially my favourite Yvonne Nelson is just too hot.”
This follows NEWS-ONE’s reports earlier this year that Yvonne Nelson was Ghana’s hottest actress in Nigeria as far as movie roles were concerned.

Nana Ama McBrown Rocks Legacy Show

Actress Nana Ama McBrown shocked music audience at the Accra International Conference Center on Saturday night when she put up a spectacular music performance during the Legends and Legacy Ball held to honour Abranie Amakye Dede.
McBrown earned a standing ovation when, during her performance, she was joined on stage by two of Ghana’s ‘diminutive’ actors, Joe Shortingo and Taller of Cantata fame.
The two actors were dressed in black tuxedos and they sprayed the actress with money while she rocked the stage. Even her ex-lover, Okyeame Kwame had no choice but to enjoy the performance.
Prior to the show, the list of artistes advertised to perform included Freddy Meiway, Samini, Okyeame, Nacy, Kwabena Kwabena and number others.

The audience was therefore shocked when midway into the show, actress Nana Ama McBrown appeared on stage wearing a see-through lacey outfit and singing Amakye Dede’s ‘Asem Tu Mea Ka Bi Ma Me’.
Underneath McBrown’s black see-through lace was a black mini dress to cover her sexy breast and lower part but revealing her sexy tummy. Many thought she was on stage to perform her recent single with 2toff. But she followed the trend of the night when she sang in key and did an amazing rendition of Amakye Dede’s songMcBrown arguably stole the show from the headlined artistes as she rocked beyond everybody’s expectation. She had her set of dancers, an indication that she might be crossing over to the music industry soon.

Her performance was not only top notch but a total deviation from the usual Ghanaian musicians’ attitude of just going on stage to perform without giving the audience something to talk about.
There were also exciting performances by Samini, Okyeame Kwame, Nacy, No Tribe, Kwabena Kwabena, Eazzy, Becca, Daasebre Ahofe Dwamena, Steve Bedi, Meiway and Abrantie Amakye Dede himself.
Organized by Imajin Advertising, the Legends and Legacy Ball is an event aimed at honouring Ghanaian living legends and promoting excellence in the entertainment industry.
All the supporting artistes who performed at the event did not sing their own songs but performed their own renditions of songs by the honoree of the night, Amakye Dede.
Abrantie, as part of his awards for the night, was presented with a 24-carat gold medal worth $28,000.
The presentation was done by the organizers of the event, Imanjin Advertising.
In addition, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) also presented a plaque to Abrantie.
Abrantie expressed his appreciation to the organizers of the show, Imajin Advertising and to Ghanaians for the honour bestowed on him and for supporting him to achieve the heights he had reached.

Opera Square Hijack Leila’s ‘Ties That Bind’ Release

Reports available to NEWS-ONE indicate that some officials of Opera Square, made of the Distributors Guild of Ghana who are responsible for film releases, and Leila Djansi are in some kind of cold war over ‘Ties That Bind’s’ release.
Distributors Guild of Ghana allegedly said it would not allow Abdul Salam, the distributor of the film, to release it.
The group allegedly said it would only allow Venus Film Productions to distribute the films if Leila rendered an unqualified apology to the group for certain comments she made about Opera Square when she had issues with one of its members.
Leila allegedly lost a huge amount of money to one of the guild’s members, and made a comment on it on Facebook which eventually ended up in the media.
For Leila, she was exercising her constitutional right, the freedom to express herself against treatment being meted out to her and her business through underhand tactics.
However, sources told NEWS-ONE that the guild was hurt by Leila’s comment and promised to deal with her drastically without even going through the merits and demerits of the issue she had with their member.
Leila didn’t want to consider the apology, but according to sources, Abdul Salam, who is also part of the guild and caught between the guild and Leila, had been coaxing Leila to do so to let sleeping dogs lie.
NEWS-ONE has intercepted a certain apology letter, purportedly written by Leila to the guild.
The paper could not get her at press time to confirm or deny the letter. NEWS-ONE will publish the full contents of the letter next week.

Yvonne Okoro reacts to claims that her sis is not Ghanaian enough to win Miss Ghana

A very emotional Yvonne Okoro has expressed her complete dismay with a recent publication that suggested that her younger sister, Rosaline Okoro doesn’t deserve to compete in the ongoing Miss Ghana beauty contest because she isn’t ‘Ghanaian’ enough. She described the article as divisive with xenophobic tendencies and lacking facts.  In a phone interview with the actress who recently won Best Pan African Actress at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards, a category for non-Nigerians, she clarified her nationality while addressing ‘frivolous’ issues raised in the said article.
She said: “I realized that the writer didn’t do due diligence in finding out about the person he was writing about, that is my family. You don’t just get up and write an article about somebody’s nationality without knowing the person or at least enquiring from the person. It is a very sensitive matter because it not just about me or the Okoro family; it’s about people who live in Ghana, people who live in Africa and the rest of the world in the face of xenophobia.”

According to Yvonne, the author based his argument on the constitution of America without even regarding what the constitution of Ghana says on what constitutes Ghanaian citizenship. Here is an excerpt from the article posted on the internet: “I do not have a problem with Roseline Okoro’s nationality as a Ghanaian. Since one of her parents is a Ghanaian, by law, she is a Ghanaian.Nationality/Citizenship can be acquired through Birth, Blood (descent) or Naturalization. This means that, by descent/blood, Roseline Okoro is a Ghanaian and SHOULD be able to participate in the Miss Ghana pageant.

However, depending on how an individual becomes a citizen of a country, there are some positions that he or she cannot/shouldn’t hold even though such a person by law is a citizen. For instance, in the United States, only a person who is a citizen by birth can become a President or Vice President. Even that, he/she must have lived in U.S.A for 14 years or more.”   Yvonne explained that right from the moment she started acting, people have been asking whether she was Nigerian or Ghanaian. “I always say that I am African and it doesn’t matter where I am from. The important thing is that, I am here and I am doing what I have to do. If I had won an award then it would be okay for same people to say Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Okoro has won an award. When my other sister suffered from a racial incident at a restaurant in Accra, they wrote asking how foreigners could come to Ghana and treat our own people in such a manner. So how come when my other sister stands for Miss Ghana they say due to the fact that she is a ‘lesser citizen’ or due to the fact that she doesn’t have a Ghanaian name, she isn’t Ghanaian enough?”

She cited Barack Obama being the President of America as an example of the fact that names not constitute nationality. She commented that even in Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings who has Scottish decent became President of the country, and honorable Hanna Tetteh-Kpodar who was born in Hungary has also held several important roles in Government.

She added: “But today my sister stands for Miss Ghana and she is chastised because our mother is Ghanaian and our father is Nigerian? Can you imagine how my father feels? He has been in this country for over 40 years he has companies in Ghana and so do I. Even my mother is feeling that after all these years we are still not accepted. And for all the other people going through similar situations, it’s not fair.” The actress used her colleague Majid Michel who is half Lebanese and half Fanti as an example stating that when Majid wins awards he wins it for Ghana. She also stated that Jackie Appiah was born in Canada and she still uses a Canadian passport. She therefore wondered if the simple fact that Jackie uses a Ghanaian surname makes her more Ghanaian.
“We have Ghanaian passports. We have lived all our lives in Ghana, we were born here. Roseline was born at the Police Hospital and I was born at the Ridge Hospital. We speak Twi and we are Fantis. So what is the problem? It was unfair for the writer to speak in the voice of Ghanaians by saying ‘the true Ghanaians will erupt in anger to defend what is rightly theirs’ if Roseline wins Miss Ghana. Who appointed him the voice of Ghana? It is such people that divide Ghanaians, it’s wrong to do that!”
expressed contentment in the fact that majority of the people who commented on the post when it was published online showed their intelligence on the matter and did not allow the writer to sway them negatively. “It is not fair for someone to site behind his computer, and use his website to defame people and the reputation of their families.I would say Ghanaians should choose the one who deserves to win the Miss Ghana crown. If it’s not my sister and it’s someone else then it’s all well and good. I know what my sister has; she is a born leader and that’s why I don’t even want to interfere in her affairs. Nobody should try to sabotage the competition.”

Actress Beverly Afaglo saddened About Anas Abortion Tapes

Actress Beverly Afaglo Baah is still in shock over the latest abortion and sex scandal revelations by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Anas’ latest investigative piece captures a medical student at a private clinic located at Madina, a suburb of Accra, forcing his female patients to have unprotected sex with him right in his theatre.
The women, some of whom are known faces in society, had gone to the clinic for surgical abortion at various times and the doctor, after making them strip naked for the operation, forced them to have sex with him with an excuse that without the sex, the abortion would not be successful. The doctor is currently in police grips being prepared for court as investigations continue into the case. His victims are over 52 in number. The video was shown on Joy TV last Wednesday.
After watching the video, Beverly was reportedly speechless.
Yesterday, she simply told NEWS-ONE, “I was really saddened by Anas’ revelation.”
The actress, who recently got married to Eugene Baah of Praye fame, yesterday took to some social networks to address the issue and advise her colleague female celebrities to be careful, so they did not fall into such hands since it could happen to anybody.
“Last night my husband and I watched an awful documentary from Anas on abortion on Joy News TV. It was about abortion pills and it was revealed that some quack doctors had sex with the women when they go for abortion. It was an awful sight that broke my heart. My husband and I were silent for minutes and we just prayed and slept quietly,” she said in a broadcast on her Black Berry.
“My issue now is any of you could be a victim to this barbaric act. You may say you’ll go to the most expensive clinics, so it can't happen to u {sic} but you’ll never know. My celebrity friends out there, a doctor may be obsessed with you and one day you fall into his hands. Nobody is perfect, we need to protect ourselves and for those of you who stick to one partner at a time you might take your pills after intercourse but sometime[s] we all know it fails us so I want to introduce to you some medication you women can use or insert five (5) minutes before intercourse to destroy the sperm when it gets inside you. Its name is TODAY or TODAY’s woman.
“I am not advertising for anybody because I don’t know the manufacturers or whatsoever, I just want [to] help my friends that I love and care about. I have used it for four years and it’s never failed me. Ladies, buy and keep in your bags and in your partner’s fridges so it’ll always be around you. Men, buy for your partners to save her life. Funny enough it is even less than 5ghc a pack, I don’t know about outside of Ghana but please find it ...End of my long story. Thanks for reading,” she noted.

The premiere would be Yvonne’s first experience as a producer and she was putting things in order to present a standard event.
Single & Married’ is about marriage with greater focus on how most men eternally craved to love and to be loved. Their emotions, passions and thoughts defining their affiliations, they ultimately walked down the paths of life in search of destiny. Lucky enough, some ended up married…many single and yet a few…just in between!
The movie tells a suspense-filled story of Jay (Chris Attoh), a top league real estate contractor; Kim (Yvonne Nelson) ex-model and fashionista and a contemporary housewife; Raymond (Kweku Elliot) an accomplished sculptor; Paula (Nadia Buari) a stuck-up lawyer; Ranesh (Kofi Adjorlolo), a 69-year-old multimillionaire and Vida (Tana Adelana), a woman just in it for the money. Nigeria Is My Second Home – Jackie Appiah

The beautiful and sexy woman who has been shuttling between Nigeria and Ghana for movie shoots revealed recently that she had never been in a rush to leave Nigeria; the reason is that, Nigeria has always been her second home.

“Nigeria is my second home, so I love working here. Whenever I am here working it is like I am working back home in Ghana. I would say my working here as compared to my working in Ghana is 50, 50. In short, I could say that I work here more than I do in Ghana. This is my second home so I am not in a rush to go back.” She said

Jackie who also talked on her acting abilities as far as outstanding qualities to have still maintained the status as most sought after actress in Africa despite her marital status, “what stand me out in acting is not quite known to me. There are so many people saying that they love my eyes, the way I roll my eyes, the way I smile, my cheek. So I suspect I interest different people in different ways”.

The actress who claimed to be God fearing and would have done Law as a profession if she had not taken to movie, concluded her chat with us sharing view on the possibility of Nollywood and Ghollywood merging as one single bigger industry.

Hear her, “we are already merging. We have been doing joint collaborations, even before I came into the industry. It will continue to grow in that direction. I believe in one big family as far as Nollywood and Ghollywood are concerned.

As you must know it is closer coming from Ghana to Lagos than travelling by air from Abuja to Lagos. Nigeria and Ghana are one. And I am happy when we do joint collaborations because most Ghanaians are happy when they see us in Nigerian movies, which also apply to the other way”.

Van Vicker’s Prop Guns Still With Nigeria Security

There are doubts over whether popular Ghanaian actor Van Vicker will be able to shoot his upcoming action movie titled, ‘Lost’.
The actor, who is just recovering from a leg injury he sustained while practising a stunt for movie, had to postpone the movie’s shoot because of his injury weeks ago.
Current reports from sources close to the actor’s Sky Orange Production were not too good as they were unsure when they will resume shooting.
According to the source, Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) was still keeping Van’s prop guns he would be using for the movie.
The SSS seized the prop guns from Van over a month ago when he was travelling from Nigeria to Ghana.
Van was trying to fly the prop guns to Ghana for the upcoming movie when it was seized from him upon a tip-off that he was transporting arms.
He had passed through all security checkpoints and was comfortably in the plane when he was called again to ascertain the contents of his luggage.
He identified the items as prop guns purposely meant for movies.
They collected the guns from him that they were taking it to an appropriate source to check their authenticity but have since not returned them to him.
The source was unable to speak to the issue of whether Van had made efforts to contact the SSS people or not.
